Tinkering with Paint 3D in Windows 10 (2023)

Paint is always spoken of a bit condescendingly, but the approachable character of the drawing program still appeals to many people. It has been a free part of Windows since 1985 and little has changed over the years. This will change with the arrival of the Creators Update for Windows 10. Microsoft is introducing Paint 3D, which should make it manageable for everyone to put together and print 3D models yourself. We'll take a look.

You can't think of it that way or it comes rolling out of a 3D printer these days. It started with applications such as a three-dimensional figure of yourself, but now architects want to conjure up entire buildings in this way and organ donors may become superfluous in the future. Because we also print those organs ourselves. 3D models are first built in software such as AutoCAD or Blender, professional programs that are not easy to master. The possibilities of Paint 3D are a lot more limited, but therefore also more accessible and suitable for taking the first steps in this area. Plus, it's still free. As a result, anyone who has even the slightest interest in 3D can simply get started.

01 Install the Creators Update

To use Paint 3D, you need the Creators Update, also known as Makers Update, fromWindows 10necessary. It adds the program to the operating system by default. The update was rolled out by Microsoft at the beginning of April. You can also update manually with the help of theWindows 10-upgradeassistent. Once you are up-to-date, you will find Paint 3D in the start menu.

02 Paint 2D

Let's first take a look at what has remained the same. You can still work in 2D in Paint 3D. The layout of the software has been overhauled. For example, you will no longer find the familiar tools at the top of the screen, but in the menu on the right. Here you select the familiar drawing tools such as the paintbrush, the pencil, the eraser and also the fill bucket. In the same menu you determine, among other things, the thickness and color of the line. Apart from the placement of the menus, Paint works as usual so far.

03 Placing 3D models

Now it's high time to discover the new 3D options. New icons can be found at the top of the screen, with the three-dimensional objects hidden behind the symbol of a cube. If you click on that, a menu of tools opens on the right ... but pens and pencils make way for shapes such as circles, triangles and ovals. Ready-made models of people and animals can also be selected. Once you have chosen an object, you can also choose its color. Then place the 3D model in your project by clicking on the white area, holding down the mouse button and dragging the mouse to determine the size. Then release the mouse button. After placing an object, you will see four buttons appear around it. This allows you to rotate and tilt the 3D figure, or to bring it more to the foreground or background. That way you can also place one object in front of another as you create more. At the bottom right of the screen you will see a scroll bar. This allows you to zoom in and out. In addition, click on the eye icon to enable the 3D view. Now you actually see the depth you have created. Editing is not possible in this mode. To continue working, click on the brush icon.

04 Edit 3D objects

Of course, it does not stop with simply placing some objects, you can also completely personalize them. The nice thing is that the good old 2D brushes just work on 3D shapes. Suppose you want to draw a face, then you first place a round circle. Then you draw two eyes and a mouth on it with the brush. You then literally draw on the 3D circle. As soon as you rotate this circle, the newly drawn face actually rotates. Incidentally, the filling bucket also works on 3D models.

05 Paste stickers

If you are not very good at drawing yourself, the new sticker function can help you. You can get started with stickers by clicking on the circle at the top: the third button from the right. Here you will also find well-known options such as placing a circle, a rectangle or an arrow. These are standard 2D shapes that you can paste onto a 3D model. Click on the smiley face in the side menu at the top to find many more stickers. Think of funny sunglasses, mustaches, cat eyes and so on.

Like pen strokes, these stick to three-dimensional objects, naturally molding to that object. The same goes for the pattern stickers, which are located under the button next to it. They ensure that an object gets a different structure. For example, you can make a marble marble from a round circle, or a wooden cube from a simple square. You place such a sticker by placing it in the right place and pressing the stamp button. By the way, you are not bound by the stickers that Microsoft has devised. You can import any image or photo of yourself as a sticker, again in the menu on the right. Click the button on the far rightCustom stickersand press theplusto import your own images.

06 From 2D to 3D

Paint 3D also gives you several options to convert your 2D drawings into a 3D object. During tinkering, it is noticeable at several times that a Make 3D button appears, for example as soon as you make a selection of a 2D drawing. This way you transform your creation into a 3D model. There is also a tool that allows you to draw 2D shapes, which then immediately take on a 3D shape. You'll find it at the bottom of the 3D Objects menu, under the name 3D Sketch.

07 Placing 3D texts

Do you want to spice up your images with text? That is still possible, now with the option to place 3D texts. At the top you will find the famous onesT-knopfor text. As soon as you click on it, a new menu opens on the right, where you can determine the font, text size and color of the letters, among other things. When creating a 3D text, you first simply type what you want to write. Then click next to the text to bring up new buttons that let you control the placement and depth of your words like any other 3D object.

08 Work of others

Despite the accessible nature, it is not that easy to come up with decent 3D creations. Other Paint 3D users can then help you through Remix 3D. Here you will find designs that others have uploaded. Remix 3D can be accessed from Paint 3D itself, via the button with the three figures at the top right. When you use Remix 3D for the first time, you will immediately see a lot of 3D objects from others. Fortunately, they are divided into categories. Under the theme 'Bedroom' you will find, for example, pre-built beds, cupboards and lamps. Musical instruments, trees and plants or exotic animals, you can't come up with it that crazy or someone has already thought of it. Log in here first with a Microsoft account. Then click on the 3D model you would like to use, and finally click on the purple place in project button. Incidentally, you are not dependent on Remix 3D alone. Paint 3D also supports .fbx, .3mf, .stl, and .obj file types, which can be imported manually.

09 Save, export and publish

Are you not done with a project yet, but do you need to take a break? Then click in the hamburger menuSave as / Save as project. Give the creature a name and clickSave 3D project. The next time you want to continue working on your creation, choose in the hamburger menuTo open. Here you will immediately find yourselfRecent projectsback. If your project is finished, chooseSave ifinExport. You can now save the file as a jpeg, png or bmp, but also as a 3mf file. The latter is a file format that can be read not only by other 3D software, but also by 3D printers. If you do not have a 3D printer yourself, you can provide such a file to print companies who can provide the 3D print for you. Finally, you can export your work to Remix 3D, so that others can work with your 3D models again. In the hamburger menu, clickPublish to Remix 3D. Enter a name and description, and add tags where your work can be found. Then just restTo publishto click.

10 Print

The best thing is of course when your 3D project really comes to life by rolling it out of a 3D printer. You can do that in the hamburger menu belowPrinting / 3D printing. If you have a 3D printer yourself, it will be selected automatically. But chances are that you don't have a 3D printer at home yet. You can then place an online order via the3D printing service. If you choose this, your model will be uploaded to theAmerican webshop. The price of the 3D print depends, among other things, on the material you choose and the scale on which it should be printed. In addition, take into account a delivery time of a few weeks. So if you are in a hurry, it is better to offer your 3mf file to a Dutch store.
